Codes to

Fourth Wing / Empyrean

by Rebecca Yarros

The propulsive second track — taiko-and-frame-drum-stacked over a live kit — is scored to the parapet-and-signet iconography of the Empyrean books. The bridge plants *the iron-tooth refrain* and *the cohort sleeps in fives because the sixth has disappeared*, decoded for fans who know which numbers were lost. Tucked into the first pre-chorus is the album's first callback phrase: *salt and ash*, dropped here as a generic dark-fantasy curse. It lands on track 15 as the Mira Vasen invocation — the tribute that reveals the closer was always going to bind to it.

Recognition flags

Three tiers of fan-recognition language.

Tier 1 — chorus / hook (easy recognition)

  • iron wing, iron heart (signet sigil iconography)
  • the parapet, the line
  • the dragon chose the rider
  • lightning in my throat (Violet's signet power)
  • the bond that broke is mine

Tier 2 — verse / pre-chorus (medium)

  • my brothers wore the leather (the Sorrengail family)
  • the threshing
  • the signet bit the inside of the wrist
  • the body lies before the mind (Violet's chronic illness)
  • the man who loved me (the lightning-shadow love interest)

Tier 3 — bridge (deep cuts for superfans)

  • Half the cohort never made it past the first weeks of the year
  • the iron-tooth refrain
  • the riders sleep in fives because the sixth has disappeared
  • I learned to name the lover from the ones who named the pain

Lyrics

Iron Wing, Iron Heart

[Verse 1]
my brothers wore the leather, they took it for the Crown
they trained the bones I borrowed for the climb
I broke a thousand promises, I broke them coming down
I learned the body lies before the mind

[Pre-Chorus]
(building)
the threshing took the second-half, the half I came to keep
the signet bit the inside of the wrist
the salt and ash they handed me, I swallowed in my sleep
the lightning was the word I couldn't miss

[Chorus]
iron wing, iron heart
the parapet, the line
I won't fall, I won't fall
the bond that broke is mine
iron wing, iron heart
the lightning in my throat
the dragon chose the rider
the rider keeps her oath

[Verse 2]
the scribe inside the rider learned to sleep beside a knife
they called me sister when they called me name
the dragon scaled the sky and made a god out of my life
the man who loved me knew it cost the same

[Pre-Chorus]
(building)
the threshing took the second-half, the half I came to keep
the signet bit the inside of the wrist
the cohort sleeps in fives because the sixth has gone to sleep
the lightning was the word I couldn't miss

[Chorus]
iron wing, iron heart
the parapet, the line
I won't fall, I won't fall
the bond that broke is mine
iron wing, iron heart
the lightning in my throat
the dragon chose the rider
the rider keeps her oath

[Bridge]
(stripped low — taiko enters under last line)
Half the cohort never made it past the first weeks of the year
the iron beak, the iron breath, the iron-tooth refrain
the riders sleep in fives because the sixth has disappeared
I learned to name the lover from the ones who named the pain

[Final Chorus]
(belted, doubled harmonies)
iron wing, iron heart
the parapet, the line
I won't fall, I won't fall
the bond that broke is mine
iron wing, iron heart
the lightning in my throat
the dragon chose the rider
and the rider — and the rider — and the rider keeps her oath

[Outro]
(taiko + frame drum tail)
iron wing, iron heart
(I won't fall)
iron wing, iron heart
(the bond that broke is mine)
